The (Senior) Research Analyst will work collaboratively to conduct applied
research. This individual will have a sophisticated understanding of how to
find and interpret economic and financial data, and will help to construct and
execute econometric models or projections.
Building upon previous Milken Institute work in regional economics and
finance, the (Senior) Research Analyst will contribute to a wide range of
projects, such as the economic impact of universities and education on state
and metropolitan economies; the payoff of investments in early childhood
health; or the impact of cross-border capital flows on economic growth and
cost of capital in countries. This position will provide an outstanding
opportunity to contribute to influential and groundbreaking reports that will
be considered by policymakers and business leaders; excellent writing skills
are required.
Based in our Santa Monica headquarters, the (Senior) Research Analyst will
also be directly involved in our major conferences. He or she will have an
opportunity to interact with the world’s foremost leaders in health, business,
finance and public policy as part of preparing for and supporting panel
sessions. Candidates for this position must have the communication and
interpersonal skills to deal with these constituents effectively.
Responsibilities:
• Build, maintain, organize and update data sets
• Participate in the development and execution of econometric models and
functions that can be integrated into a wide range of projects
• Write up findings and recommendations that can be shared with stakeholders
and disseminated to impact public policy
• Work with the head of research to conduct broader economic and statistical
analysis
• Assist senior staff by developing presentations for conferences and forums
• Make presentations and participate in discussions with the media and
stakeholders
Requirements:
• For Research Analyst, bachelor’s degree in economics with 1-2 years of
experience or master’s degree with limited experience. For Senior Research
Analyst, master’s degree in economics with 2-5 years of experience; Ph.D. is a
plus but not required.
• Ability to understand and work with complex economic and financial data.
Must be able to maintain, organize and update large data sets.
• Statistical estimation and model-building skills, including econometrics
using statistical software such as STATA, SAS, SPSS or EViews.
• Outstanding written and oral communication skills. Must be able to translate
complex economic and financial issues for an educated lay audience.
• Experience in developing PowerPoint presentations and managing complex data
with Excel spreadsheets
• Familiarity with publicly available government data sets both on the state
and federal level is a strong plus.
• Must be a self-starter who takes initiative
• Ability to work as part of a team and perform under deadline pressure

The California Center at the Milken Institute is focused on improving lives
and the economy statewide. This position requires an excellent communicator
who is knowledgeable about California, its economy and its politics, and has a
passion for tackling key issues faced by leaders, businesses and residents.
The (Senior) Research Analyst will work principally with the head of the
California Center and development staff on projects involving economic growth
and development in California. In addition, this team member will work with
the head of the broader research department and other members of the research
team to conduct detailed analysis, principally in the areas of regional
economics. The right candidate will be skilled at interpreting economic and
financial data, and writing clear and compelling analyses of economic,
demographic and resource trends affecting the state’s future.
The (Senior) Research Analyst will interact frequently with business and
political leaders as well as the public, so excellent written and verbal
communication skills are essential. This position will provide an outstanding
opportunity to contribute to influential, ground-breaking reports that will be
read and considered by policymakers and the business community. Based in Santa
Monica, the (Senior) Research Analyst will also be directly involved in our
conferences, particularly the California-focused State of the State
Conference. He or she will collaborate with prominent individuals as part of
preparing for and supporting panel sessions.
The California Center provides a local and state focus to the Institute’s
highly regarded work in regional economics, particularly in technology and
knowledge-based economic development. In the months ahead, the center will
continue to build on the Milken Institute’s previous work in tech-based
development, motion picture and television production, transportation
infrastructure, and energy, with a particular focus on job creation.
Responsibilities:
• Conduct applied research.
• Write up findings and recommendations that can be shared with stakeholders
and disseminated to impact public policy.
• Analyze state and local data, ranging from venture capital investments to
occupational data to trends in goods movement. Evaluate the economic benefits
and ramifications of different scenarios.
• Work with the head of the California Center to help develop content for
California-specific forums.
• Assist senior staff in developing high-impact presentations, primarily using
PowerPoint.
• Make presentations and participate in discussions with the media and
stakeholders when new publications are released and as part of the Institute’s
ongoing work.
Requirements
• Master’s degree or Ph.D. in economics, public policy, business or a related
field. Must have completed coursework in economics or statistics if the
primary degree is not in economics.
• Two to four years of work experience in a field that directly deals with
California policy or the state economy.
• Familiarity and experience with statistical estimation and software, such as
STATA, SAS, SPSS or EViews. Experience using AREMOS and regional modeling
software such as IMPLAN or REMI TranSight is preferred. Experience with
data-mapping software such as ArcGIS is also beneficial.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to explain
complex economic and financial issues to an educated lay audience.
